How much biryani do you need for 100 to 500 people, and what does it cost in Dubai?

How much biryani per person should I order?
It depends on whether biryani is the main dish and who is eating. Caterers publish different guides, so we give a range and ask you to choose by situation. We have not published our own serving weight; ask us what a serving is when you request a quote.
Biryani is one of several dishes
About 250 to 350 g per adult: 25 to 35 kg for 100 guests, 62.5 to 87.5 kg for 250 guests and 125 to 175 kg for 500 guests.
Biryani is the main dish
About 350 to 450 g per adult: 35 to 45 kg for 100 guests, 87.5 to 112.5 kg for 250 guests and 175 to 225 kg for 500 guests.
Heavy appetites: labour, sports, celebrations, iftar
About 400 to 500 g per adult: 40 to 50 kg for 100 guests, 100 to 125 kg for 250 guests and 200 to 250 kg for 500 guests.
How the ranges were built: Taza Biryani & Grills (Dubai) suggests 350 to 400 g per adult when biryani is the main dish, 300 to 350 g alongside other mains, 400 to 450 g for weddings, iftar and community events, and 450 to 500 g for construction sites and labour camps. Ghousia Nalli Biryani (Karachi) suggests 350 to 450 g when biryani is the main dish and 250 to 300 g when it is one of several dishes. We took the overall range. Children eat less; Taza suggests roughly half an adult portion.
Add a buffer. Taza suggests 10 to 20 percent extra, more for buffet-style or long events. Count service staff and drivers in the headcount.
What does bulk biryani cost per head in Dubai?
We can give you the published prices and a way to work out your own number. We cannot give a delivered price per head without your order details.
- Chicken biryani or chicken pulao: AED 10 per serving, kitchen collection.
- Beef pulao AED 13, beef biryani AED 14, per serving, collection.
- Fresh harisa AED 12 and zarda sweet rice AED 6, per serving, collection.
- Bulk delivery: quoted per order. The total and delivery fee are confirmed before you accept, and there is no blanket discount rate.
Those are collection prices. Bulk orders are priced separately, and the quote depends on the dish mix, quantity, packing, date and location.
To budget, ask for a quote and work out: total quote ÷ number of guests = cost per head. Ask what is included: serving size, packing, delivery and VAT. The standard rate of VAT in the UAE is 5 percent (Federal Tax Authority), so ask whether the quote includes it and whether you will get a tax invoice.
How do I order for a big group? (6 steps)
- Count adults and children, and any guests who do not eat beef or chicken.
- Choose the dishes. Chicken biryani, chicken pulao, beef pulao, beef biryani, harisa and zarda are on our menu. A split count per dish is easier to quote.
- Send the quote request with the date, time, exact address or map pin and who receives the food. We ask for at least one day's notice for bulk orders.
- Say how you want it packed, and ask what packing options are available.
- Confirm the total and delivery fee before you accept. No online payment is taken on the site, so ask how payment works and what invoice you will get.
- Nominate one person to receive the delivery and check the count.

What food-safety rules apply to bulk delivery in Dubai?
Dubai Municipality's Food Safety Department sets them. Its guideline DM-FSD-GU63 on food transportation and delivery vehicles (2023) says:
- Food must be sourced only from food establishments licensed to operate in the UAE.
- Hot food must be delivered in equipment that holds it at 60°C or above. Hot food in an insulated box needs a box that keeps it above 60°C through loading, transport and storage until service.
- Cold food must be held at 5°C or below, and dry food at 30°C or below.
- Food vehicles operating in Dubai need an annual permit issued digitally by an approved vehicle testing centre. The digital permit is linked to the vehicle and can be verified on the Foodwatch platform.
- Food that needs different temperatures must be kept in separate food units, insulated from each other.
Source: Dubai Municipality, "Requirements for Food Transportation and Delivery Vehicles Guidelines" (DM-FSD-GU63, 31/08/2023). The Sharjah and Ajman municipalities have their own food authorities, so ask them what applies if you are receiving food from a Dubai kitchen.
Ask any caterer to show their food-establishment licence and their delivery vehicle's food permit, and to explain how they keep the food hot.
What if I'm serving at a venue or hall?
The organiser manages the recipients and any venue permissions. Our bulk meal page says we can discuss preparing and handing over the food. If you need serving staff or buffet set-up, ask us whether they are available.
